Meditation In The News
Famous Mystics

Over the past 30 years there has been an abundance of research on the negative health impact of stress, the positive effects of meditation in reducing that impact, and other benefits of meditation. The links below are to the research pages of leading medical journals and associations that provide information on meditation research.

For additional resources on meditation, check out the meditation page on the Mommy Mystic blog, or the 'Science and Spirituality' category in the associated Amazon store.

The Benson-Henry Institute For Mind/Body Medicine
This Institute is perhaps the leading medical organization in the field of mind/body awareness and meditation research. Dr. Herbert Benson, M.D. discovered and defined the ‘relaxation-response’ - the physiologic effects elicited by meditation, and the opposite of the ‘fight or flight’ response.

Over the years he has published hundreds of articles on the negative impact of stress and the effectiveness of the relaxation response in combating it. Much of his research can be found at http://www.mbmi.org/research/published.asp. Articles investigate the usefulness of meditation in combating anxiety, cardiac problems, chronic pain, menopause, infertility, hypertension, and many more issues.

National Library of Medicine
The National Library of Medicine catalogues and archives articles from hundreds of medical and academic journals through its PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi/) service. Some of the articles are available in entirety for free, others must be purchased from the printing journal. Simply search on the terms ‘meditation’ or ‘relaxation reponse’.

Heldref
Heldref is a non-profit publisher of scholarly journals and publications. While they do provide abstracts of their articles online, direct links are not available. Search for ‘meditation’ at http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/heldref/

Mayo Clinic
The world-reknowned Mayo Clinic offers a health information site to the public, and recommends meditation as part of the treatment strategy for many ailments. All articles are compiled and reviewed by Mayo Clinic staff based on current research. Simply search for ‘meditation’ at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/SEARCH/Search
